Periodical-Lee 2017

This year of transitions began with a quote I had heard in January that resonated throughout the entire year: “The days are long but the years are short.” It’s so poignant and self-explanatory that I hadn’t bothered to look up the quote until just now — it comes from Gretchen Rubin’s book The Happiness Project.

And in drafting this year’s letter, both kids asked the interesting question about what goes into the letter or more specifically, what gets omitted. Is it always just the happy stuff?

It’s a blessing that our lives have been so filled with good stuff relative to the short word count for these letters that we don’t really need to include the sadder stuff. But like everyone, there are always challenges. And it’s really hard to write tersely about those challenges. So for this year, let’s just say that we truly appreciate the preciousness of life and good health, and how fragile these can be.

And that in the backdrop of that fragility, having families reunite to see a new family form at a wedding is even more precious.

•    Twelve - training days Noah took to be a Residential Advisor (RA) in his sophomore year at Missouri University of Science & Technology.
•    Eleven - days of hosting out-of-town guests for Amy’s wedding in August!
•    Ten - how many Boy Scout camping trips Denise went on. She’s still leading the Scouts (now as a Commissioner!) and will eventually persuade Sherman to go on his first Scout camping trip.
•    Nine - how many times Denise thought about adopting a dog from the APA (where she regularly drops off donations for pets on behalf of her clients from her professional organizing business). Patches and Cuddles, our resident cats, are not pleased…
•    Eight - number of free gourmet cupcakes Amy brought home from one of her registered dietician internships this past summer. Our heads spun from the diversity of all her internships and we rejoiced with her after she got her certification. She’s taking online classes this year and plans to earn her master’s degree in 2018
•    Seven – number of video interview subjects as part of a short film series Sherman worked on for a non-profit group throughout the year, including some film work in Denver! Check out crossings.org for more details.
•    Six – was the actual tally for how many times Sherman teared up during the wedding day. (Recall from last year’s letter there was a betting pool on the tally.)
•    Five - number of people who performed Hawaiian songs at the wedding rehearsal dinner, which was the only surprise in the weekend’s schedule. In addition to Sherman’s Hawaiian band mates (Jim Chickering and Wil Cruz), we were joined by close family friends Michael Kunz and Deb Bohlmann to sing Disney’s “Lava” as the soundtrack for a photo slideshow for Amy and Drew. The rest of the wedding weekend was excellently planned by Amy with beautiful personal touches throughout.
•    Four – as in Fourth of July. Sherman celebrated the holiday in Washington, DC, as part of supporting Circus Harmony (as a board member and also by not performing) in their appearance at the 2017 Smithsonian Folklife Festival.
•    Three – number of children in the family now, since we gained a son (didn’t lose a daughter), as pictured on our holiday card
•    Two - on his 2nd day at his summer job (Ace Hardware) there was a power outage and Noah had to process everything on pen and paper.
•    One - as in the One who we celebrate this time of year...

Health, happiness and humor to you in 2018!

Periodical-Lee 2016

•    Twelve - grades of public school completed by Noah, upon high school graduation (upper middle on the holiday photo).  Including Amy’s kindergarten year we just completed 17 years with the public schools and to Noah’s chagrin we savored every last moment this year with him. Whether it was with the tennis team (lower right on the holiday photo card), soccer, drum line, or just watching him hang out with “the squad” it’s been a good run and we look forward to what the future brings for all those folks.
•    Eleven - weeks for the Great Kitchen IKEA-zation of 2016.  There was lots of turmoil and stress trying to finish that before graduation season, but was well worth it for the stylistic and functional improvements. And lots of extra planning/shopping trips to Denise’s favorite theme park, IKEA? Double-win!
•    Ten - how Noah felt on his Eagle Scout Days: passing the Board of Review and his Court of Honor.  That developmental journey is best represented at his Court of Honor, presenting the Mentor Pin to close family friend (okay, more like brother/uncle) Kent MacLean (lower middle on the card).
•    Nine - semesters projected for Noah at the Missouri University of Science and Technology at Rolla, MO.  Although starting as a computer engineer with his sights on something like a Disney Imagineer, he’s considering switching majors and estimates it might take an extra semester to finish that off.  Given his high math scores so far, who would argue with his forecasts?
•    Eight - days in NY for Sherman this year.  One trip was with Noah to visit Sherman’s dad, and also included an all-day tour of Manhattan (museums, comic book shops, etc.) on the coldest day of the year.  That wonderfully customized tour was given by a cousin, whose wedding (on the most beautiful day of the year) was the reason for the second NY/CT trip, taken with Denise
•    Seven - days in northern Bay Area California for an extended family vacation. As much as we enjoyed seeing the sights (like Muir Woods!) and San Francisco, nothing tops just spending time with relatives and seeing how quickly all the children are maturing. Although Amy couldn’t join this year, we all video-chatted with her as much as we could.
•    Six - years Amy and Drew will have dated prior to the wedding (lower left on the holiday photo card is one of their engagement photos). We couldn’t be happier about their future lives together, except perhaps that Drew is so far away in Idaho for his first full-time job as a mining engineer. And apparently there’s an over/under betting pool about how many times Sherman will cry moisten his eyes on the wedding day. Not sure who’s charged with keeping the official tally...
•    Five - hours a week (minimum) that Denise and Sherman volunteer with Boy Scouts, civic, and arts/education institutions as new empty nesters. Even if the house is empty, the schedules are quite full...
•    Four - years completed at Missouri State University at Springfield for Amy’s graduation, upper left on the holiday photo card. With years of going to color guard and drum line championships in Springfield (while Amy was in high school), plus Noah’s graduation from the drum line, it’s a bit sad that there’s no annual reason for a Springfield trip. On the other hand, the spirit of Springfield will be well-represented at the wedding.
•    Three - scholarships for Noah at Senior Night. That the alumni scholarship committee couldn’t narrow down to four awardees and instead divided their pool to the eight semifinalists (including Noah) says loads about Noah’s graduating class. And the pleasantest surprise of the night was Noah winning the English Department scholarship, especially because Sherman’s mom is a retired high school English teacher.
•    Two - semesters for Amy to complete in her internship year for registered dietetics in Kansas City. After the internship, Amy plans to complete her master’s degree and devise ways of leveraging her degree while in Idaho (or other mining locales).
•    One - as in the One who we celebrate this time of year.

Health, happiness and humor to you in 2017!

Periodical-Lee 2015

Clockwise from top left: Amy and Noah; Drew and Noah helping cousins Jasmine and Jason watch the Disney parade, with Amy photobombing in the middle; Koa on his last good walk to the park; Drew and Amy showcasing their culinary and pop culture skills; family at the MUNY to see "Into the Woods"; Noah facing the future with firm feline foundation.

Here’s our 2015 in a numeric nutshell, Twelve Days of Christmas style...

12 - years of Denise being blessed as a Scout Leader, to witness the development of many fine young men.  With Noah’s tenure almost complete, will Denise continue? Hmm...
11.5 - years for Noah of public school.  On top of rigorous academics: soccer, French Club, tennis, debate, and of course, winter drum line team. Noah is applying to college, interested in majoring in engineering of the computer science and/or electrical variety.
10 - a full decade of the best dog ever, Koa. In Hawaiian, it means “strong and brave” but anyone who met Koa knew him better as playful and friendly.  As a Whippet and Border Collie mix, he ran the fastest circles and was the best Frisbee dog we’ve ever known.  Rest in peace, Koa.
9 - days in southern California. It’s not the actual activities we’ll remember so much as visiting with relatives and friends.  Actually, we’ll remember the 14 hours at Disneyland because lots of relatives went, and of course, it’s Disneyland!
8 - guys in Noah’s Dungeons and Dragons group. A new hobby, Noah enjoys his role as Dungeon Master with his fertile imagination, and hosting most of the gatherings.  Our house may be just a tad quieter next year after he leaves for college.
7 - musical performances for Sherman in a fortnight to celebrate Advent and Christmas, with three different groups.  His resolution for next year?  Look at a monthly calendar view before confirming gigs.
6 - days for Noah and Sherman at the triennial national youth gathering with their church youth group in Detroit. It was Noah’s second trip, filled with community service, education, worship and fellowship. A new adventure this time around:  Sherman directed the teen praise band (for the Kansas-Missouri area), and Noah joined in on percussion.
5 - the number of person-hours logged in designing, baking and building the "Game of Thrones”-themed “Red Wedding” cake for Sherman’s birthday.  Cake created by Amy, sword rendered by Drew...
4 - … Drew, who on the Fourth of July, proposed to Amy!  We’re all ecstatic about this news, and marvelous pro-active people that they are, they’re planning on tying the knot the summer of 2017, after Amy completes a one-year internship program.  Amy and Drew will graduate in May 2016, and Drew will start working full-time at a mining company (where he’s interned for the past three summers) while Amy completes her studies.
3 - number of terms Denise just completed as the President of the St. Louis chapter of National Association of Professional Organizers. Similar to her Scout leadership role, Denise volunteers many hours to this organization (no pun intended), helping advance the vision of helping people overcome challenges, and gets as much in return as she gives.
2 - the number of "fine feline cats” (Patches and Cuddles) in our household, who fill the Koa void.  By the way, that’s Denise’s preferred wording, because their cat awesomeness is so great it requires the extra emphasis.
1 - as in The One who we celebrate this time of year. The last of Sherman’s musical gigs was as accompanist for the Sunday School Christmas program. Normally Sherman runs the sound board, but with the passing of dear friend Mary (who played piano for these programs going back when Amy was little), there was cascading change of leadership for the program. We weren’t sure if it would come together for the big day, even though all the pieces were there. But the most important thing about the program comes during practice and absorbing the Word. And through all of that practice it was our faith in Christ that did gather our efforts to make everything click on the big day, with everyone reflecting the Christmas message embedded in their hearts and minds…

Here’s to health, happiness and humor in 2016!
